The principal factor for the founding of JK MAASS FOUNDATION is the scarce opportunities available in the society for the enhancement of disabled population, particularly the children affected by Cerebral Palsy. This foundation is focused on working for the enhancement of disabled in urban slums and rural areas of Madurai district.
In rural areas, it works directly in the field through Community Based Rehabilitation (CBR) to provide therapeutic services to the differently abled at their doorsteps. The foundation also works for the formation of “Special Self Help Group” for the persons with disabilities in rural areas. The foundation works, in grouping people with disabilities within their local community and help them in getting benefits from the government schemes. The foundation advocates for the neglected children with disability to get included in the mainstream schools with in their villages.
In urban areas the focus is on rehabilitation of under priviliged, ignorant and victimized children affected by Cerebral Palsy. The foundation is running a “Special School” named “Able Kids” for children affected by Cerebral Palsy. The school provides special education, therapeutic care and pre vocational guidance and training for them.
Identifying the disability at its early stage is mostly half way in its recovery, the foundation has started an “Early intervention centre” named “Sooryodhayam” for the children below 8 years in the year 2006. Here the main focus is on Early identification, various therapeutic interventions and parental counseling and training.
The foundation runs a Physiotherapy Out-patient Unit for the welfare of both rural and urban mass of the Madurai district. This unit provides Physiotherapy treatment to the needy with various physical problems. This is done with the support of highly sophisticated electrotherapy and Exercise therapy equipments. The unit focuses on creating awareness among the people about the cause and effect of simple temporary physical problems which develop into permanent physical issues in the future. Added to this people are given counseling in a preventive aspect of the physical disabilities. It is also the Resource and Experience sharing centre for the emerging physicaltherapy and other rehabilitation professionals.
The foundation is working on raising the awareness of the needs of the Cereberal Palsy children among the society, so that they get the support they deserve from the general public and from the Government.
